Case Study: Floortec
Floortec Seamless Coatings is a Sunshine Coast family owned business that provides epoxy coatings to floors in homes, schools, hotels, hospitals, aged care facilities, clubs, councils and state government institutions. The coatings are long-lasting, decorative, have low maintenance and are highly durable. The Queensland Government decided to regulate contractors who painted materials onto surfaces, and required them to become accredited through the Painting Contractors Certification Program (PCCP).
This introduced Martin Nolan, Floortec’s Managing Director, to the idea of Quality Management Systems. He decided to be proactive and contacted Best Practice Business Systems to see what was involved in setting up a QMS to ISO9001. This was all new to Martin and he can remember that it took him three meetings before he suddenly understood what a QMS was all about. The trust he put in the consultant Jim Joyce paid off, and the QMS now gives him the confidence that he is doing things right.
His partner, Margaret Connor, agreed to be the Quality Representative. This enabled Margaret to add her outstanding administration skills to the running of the quality side of the business, and in doing so enhanced their teamwork together. They managed to gain their second-party certification in under two months.
Martin could see the advantages of ISO systems, and as soon as the QMS was certified he decided that he wanted to set up an Environmental Management System to ISO14001. Margaret agreed to be the Environmental Representative, and two months later they gained this certification.
Martin is in no doubt that his certified QMS, which allows him to carry out work for the Queensland Government, has increased his annual turnover. He estimates that the turnover has trebled during this period.
